We look, then you decide

We Go Up And Look At Your Stack

You cannot see the top of your own chimney, and that is the trouble with a stack. By the time you notice mortar on the path or a stain spreading across the chimney breast, it has usually been letting water into your house for a while.

So we come out and look at yours properly - the joints, the mortar cap your pots are bedded into, and the lead where the stack meets your roof. Then you get a straight answer on which of those has gone, what we would do about it, and what it will cost you.

Pointing, new flaunching, pots re-bedded, fresh lead at the base, or the stack taken down and rebuilt. You only get quoted for the one yours actually needs, and a stack that only wants pointing gets told it only wants pointing. The roof check is free. Ring 01323 33 55 33.

What you get from us

Why Ours Lasts On Your Stack

You get lead, not a bead of sealant

We cut new lead into the mortar course and dress it down over your tiles, so your stack stops feeding water into the house. Sealant round a stack buys you one winter, then you are paying somebody all over again.

Mortar matched to your brick

We mix ours to suit the brick your stack is built from, lime on the older ones. Hard cement on soft red brick traps the water in and takes the face off it, and you would be paying us to rebuild the thing a few years later.

You are not sold a rebuild you do not need

If your stack only wants its pots re-bedding, that is what we will tell you and that is all you will be charged for. And if it is sound, we will say so and leave it alone.

Chimney Work You Can Book Us For

Whatever your stack turns out to need, this is what you get:

  • Repointing - we rake your worn joints back and make them good in a mix chosen to suit your brick, so the stack stops drinking every time it rains.
  • New flaunching - we cut off the cracked mortar cap your pots sit in and renew it, so water stops running straight down beside them.
  • Fresh lead at the base - you get new aprons, soakers, step flashings and back gutter, chased into the joint properly, so the junction with your roof stops leaking.
  • Pots re-bedded or replaced - we set your cracked or leaning pots right, and cap off a flue you no longer use while leaving it ventilated.
  • Rebuilds - where yours is too far gone to point, we take it down to a sound course and rebuild it in matching brick, so it does not read as new from the street.
  • Removal - if you would sooner see the back of it, we take the stack down for you and make your roof good where it stood.

We were putting pots and flaunching back on stacks across the town for weeks after Storm Ciaran in November 2023. If you can rake the mortar out of a joint with your finger, your stack should not go another winter, and we would rather look at it now than after it has come down.

Give us a ring on 01323 33 55 33 and somebody will come and look over your stack. The roof check is free, you are under no obligation, and you pay nothing whether the work goes ahead or not.

Common questions

Chimney Questions We Get Asked In Eastbourne

From the top of it, which is the one place nobody looks from the street. The signs from the ground are mortar on the path below the stack, a pot leaning, staining on the chimney breast inside, or a damp patch on the ceiling beside it after heavy rain. Any of those is worth a free roof check, and the answer to that is often that it needs pointing and nothing else.

Usually not. Taking one down means work below the roof as well as above it. Capping the flue while leaving it ventilated is cheaper and better: the cap keeps rain out, and the vent stops the stack sweating inside.

The sloped mortar cap the pots are bedded into. It sheds water off the top of the stack. When it cracks, water runs straight down inside the brickwork, and on a stack that has stood since the terrace was built it is usually the first thing to go.

For a stack, almost always. You cannot work on one off a ladder with any safety, and you need both hands and the materials beside you. On a terrace the scaffold usually goes up from the pavement or the yard behind, and on a semi it stands in the side return, so it is worth mentioning at the roof check if either of those is awkward.

Height, mostly. A stack on a Victorian terrace stands well above the ridge with nothing sheltering it, and the mortar between its bricks is lime rather than cement and softer for it. A thirties semi has a shorter stack in harder brick, so the same weather takes longer to find its way in. Both fail the same way in the end: joints, then flaunching, then the lead.

For a winter or two. Sealant over a step flashing hides the join without mending it, and once it lifts the water goes in behind it and down the side of the stack. The proper repair is new lead: an apron across the front, soakers and step flashings up each side, and a back gutter behind, each chased into a mortar joint and dressed down. The leadwork page has the detail.
